Kids Fly Fishing Camp in Corpus Christi

Want to learn more about fly fishing from some of the best fly anglers in Texas? Captains Marcus Haralson, Ken Jones, and William Townsend are hosting a kids spring break fly fishing camp in Corpus Christi, Texas!

You’ll learn about fly casting, fly selection, fly tying, safety, poling, and more on the south Texas flats.

Cost is $1,000 per person, which must be paid in full upon booking.

Introduction Camp is March 10-12, and Intermediate is March 13-14. Ages 10-18 years.

Camp Schedule

Kids Camp Introductory: 3 Days

Day One

0800-  Start time   Meet at launch spot________

0800-0815- Go over safety checks and depart for training area

0815-0845- Running time to training location

0845-0930-Introduction and Casting lesson by Capt. Ken Jones. He truly is one of the most talented fly casters of our generation.

0930-1200- Kids split up and load on the boats. This is where each Captain can get the camper acclimatized to moving around on the skiff, help with fish identification, basic fundamentals, and help improve casting in a smaller group setting. Campers will have an opportunity then to try those new skills out while getting poled around on their own classroom!

1200-1230- Group meets up at a designated spot to have lunch. During lunch we will listen to each camper and what they’ve taken away from the morning’s experience. *Captains will talk and if we feel like some campers need some more one on one casting lessons we will let them work with one of the guides after lunch.

1230-1530- For the rest of the day campers will be fishing. During this time Captain’s will have an opportunity to help show campers “personal” little tricks of the trade to make them better fly anglers while continuing to work on fundamentals.

1530-1600- Running time back to launch location to drop off kids.

1600- Wait for parents and go over the plan for the following day

Day Two

0800- Start time   Meet at launch spot________

0800-0815- Go over safety checks and depart for training area

0815-0845- Running time to training location

0845-0930- First Aid, Safety, and Environmental Precautions class taught by Capt. Marcus Haralson who has almost a decade of medical experience as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman.

0930-1230- Kids split up again, rotating with different captains for a 1 hour on the water instruction.

  • Captain Ken Jones- How to read and navigate with a paper chart.
  • Captain William Townsend- Research: How the tides, wind, moon, weather affects the fishing.
  • Captain Marcus Haralson- Fly selection and material movement in water

1230-1530- Have the kids split up into even teams. Then have each team implement the knowledge they have learned for the last two days and allow them to decide what area(s) we fish in until the end of the day.

1530- 1600- Running time back to the ramp to dropoff campers.

1600- Wait for parents and go over the plan for the next day.

Day Three

0800- Start time   Meet at launch spot________

0800-0815- Go over safety checks and depart for training area

0815-0845- Running time to training location

0845-0930- Boating Etiquette by Captain William Townsend

0930-1530- Camp Fly Tournament: Campers will then split up into teams and use all the knowledge they’ve learned over the last few days to compete against each other. Teams will be in charge of fly selection and fishing location(s), with minimal guidance from the Captains. This will be a catch, photo, and release tournament. With prizes going to Top Team, Top Angler, Most improved, and other quirky titles.

1530-1600- Running time.

1600- End of Tournament.      *Results for the tournament will be judged by the 3 Captains.

1630-Award Ceremony and Parent pick up

 

Kids Camp Intermediate 2 Days

Day One

0800- Start time   Meet at launch spot________

0800-0815- Go over safety checks and depart for training area

0815-0845- Running time to training location

0845-0900- Introduction and break in to groups with each Captain for a quick casting clinic to learn the skill level of each angler.

0900-1200- Split up campers for a one hour on the water presentation with each Captain.

  • Captain Marcus Haralson- Casting breakdown/analyses for each camper. Capt. Marcus then will help with techniques to improve casting accuracy and range.
  • Captain Ken Jones- Poling into: He will teach an intro lesson on poling and how to read a flat. Then getting each camper equal time to pole, Capt. Ken will help them with techniques and how to maneuver a flat from the poling platform.
  • Captain William Townsend- Boat Handling: Captain William Townsend will take the campers out for an on the water boat handling class. With over 20+ years of Captains experience, he will show them how to run a boat in rough conditions, How and why to use trim tabs and jackplate, how to pass fellow boaters to include boating etiquette, safety, and rescue. Campers will be given scenarios to solve or act out.

1200-1230- Group meets up at a designated spot to have lunch. During lunch we will listen to each camper and what they’ve taken away from the morning’s experience. *Captains will talk and split campers into teams.

1630-Camper Pickup

Day Two

0800-0815- Go over safety checks.

0815-0830- Running time to training location

0830-1000- Training will be given to the campers by all 3 Captains over a more advanced Navigation, map reading, and safety course.

1000-1600- Camp Fly Tournament: Campers will then split up into teams and use all the knowledge they’ve learned over the last few days to compete against each other. Teams will be in charge of fly selection and fishing location(s), with minimal guidance from the Captains. This will be a catch, photo, and release tournament. With prizes going to Top Team, Top Angler, Most improved, and other quirky titles.

1600- End of Tournament.      *Results for the tournament will be judged by the 3 Captains.

1630-Award Ceremony and Parent pick up
